An Arsenal FC footballer who went to school in Garston has supported a campaign to protect football from the growing impact of climate change.
Alexei Rojas, 19, is a Parmiter’s School alumnus and a vocal sustainability advocate, who is highlighting the importance of protecting the planet and football for future generations.
Goalkeeper Alexei is rallying behind Pitches in Peril, the first global climate risk report for football, revealing how climate change is threatening the game from World Cup stadiums to community pitches. The study calls for urgent action to protect the future of the sport.
Alexei said: “I love using football for change. Climate change is already affecting football. We are seeing the impact all over the world in every context, not just football but in the personal lives of many people. It’s very sad to see that there are many people who have to leave their homes for new countries, who are now called climate refugees, refugees because they can no longer live there due to climate conditions.
“When I hear the word sustainability, what comes to mind is that future generations will be able to do the same things we do. That we all take action every day to not have a negative impact on the future of football. So that in 20 years’ time, children will still be able to come to this park, that they will have a place to practice and play with a smile on their face.”
