A Watford man has been given a custodial sentence for a series of shoplifting offences.

James Anderson, aged 38, of no fixed abode, was arrested by local neighbourhood officers on Tuesday, December 10 on suspicion of four shoplifting offences, four breaches of a Community Protection Notice (CPN) which prohibits him from entering the town centre and an attempted theft from a shop.

He appeared at Hatfield Magistrates’ Court the next day (Wednesday, December 11) where he pleaded guilty to the offences.

Anderson had stolen bottles of alcohol from M&S on two occasions, a jacket from Keech Hospice Care charity shop and a game from Waterstones. He also attempted a further theft of alcohol from M&S.

Anderson was jailed for 12 weeks and was ordered to pay compensation.

Inspector Dan Jones, from the Watford Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We remain committed to supporting local shops and businesses and would encourage them to continue to contact us if an offence is taking place so we can attend and take swift action.”
