Hundreds of people attended the first cultural event held at a newly built synagogue on Stanmore Hill.
Mosaic Jewish Community (MJC) hosted a multi-faith jazz peace concert on Sunday, November 20.
The concert was organised by Jane Prentice, chair of MJC’s Cultural Hub, and featured a fusion of jazz and choir music, with psalms as the focal point. It was inspired by the Reverend Margaret Scrivener, who suggested jazz music could act as a vehicle for the psalms.
Jacqui Dankworth starred in the show, with composer David Gordon producing three new compositions for Psalms 22, 100 and 139.
Chris Harrick played a Muslim-inspired rendition of the song Msunduza and Tim Garland played a rendition of Search for Peace on the saxophone.
Harry Davies, a member of MJC, said: “What better way to introduce MJC’s new synagogue on Stanmore Hill to the wider community than with a multi-faith concert with a theme of peace?
“The gates of MJC opened for the first of many events that hopefully will add to the variety and cohesion of the wider community.”
