To many, Leavesden Country Park may just be like the other green spaces in Hertfordshire.
But this site was for 127 years home to Leavesden Asylum, a hospital that would house thousands of people over the decades.
Though many elements of the hospital have been removed, some still remain. We were guided around the site by Leavesden Hospital History Association volunteer Emma Frost, and were shown the old admin building, the recreation hall, houses and the entrance to the underpass beneath College Road, which is now filled in.
Emma also showed us some of the site’s artefacts, and told us several of the hospital’s most interesting stories.
