Since youth, many of us are told to aim high and reach for the stars and for Abbots Langley resident and year 10 pupil Sofia, this is exactly what she is doing to reach her career goals.
With her dream to become a marine biologist in sight, Sofia is determined to grab all opportunities that propel her towards that dream with both hands.
Embarking on a four-week volunteering challenge in Borneo with Camp International in 2027, Sofia is looking to raise £5,500 to cover the trip’s cost, which will take place after she has completed her GCSEs in the summer of 2026.
The trip will allow Sofia to work in Bornean communities on projects helping improve lives, from spending time in local schools to being up close to colourful marine life and biodiversity.
Catching up with ABBOTSnews in December, Sofia said: “Since primary school, I have dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. At my year 6 leavers’ assembly, I was even voted ‘most likely to swim with sharks’, I am passionate about conservation and hope to one day help protect coral reefs.”
Participants who take part will also have the opportunity to learn scuba diving through a PADI Open Water Scuba Course, allowing them to explore the underwater environment more deeply.
Before ABBOTSnews went to print, the total on Just Giving was nearing £2,000, and to boost the amount, Sofia will also be taking part in a raffle and offering services locally, such as babysitting, dog walking and car washing.
