PARKING PROBLEMS: Concerns double yellow lines in Nash Mills will cause ‘carnage’

Plans to install double yellow lines on a road in Nash Mills have caused a stir in the community, with concerns about demand for parking spaces.

The lines are due to be installed on Red Lion Lane in May. Some residents have opposed the plans, saying it will create problems for residents of nearby Nash Mills Wharf who use the road to park, while others have argued that the lines will prevent parked cars creating dangers for other drivers.

Speaking to KingsNews, Nash Mills borough councillor Jan Maddern said she supports the idea of double yellow lines, but only on a short stretch of the road where the island is located.

She said: “I absolutely agree that there should be double yellow lines, but they should not be put there until they’ve found a parking solution.

“Nearby roads are already badly impacted by the lack of parking at Nash Mills Wharf and suddenly they will have to deal with 40 more cars. It will be carnage.”

Cllr Maddern added that she had suggested building a sustainable car park on land nearby to provide a solution, which was supported by developers. However, due to its location on green belt land, this was rejected by Dacorum Borough Council (DBC).

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: “We appreciate that the proposed parking restrictions in Red Lion Lane/Nash Mills Lane will cause some inconvenience to residents, however the current situation with cars parking on the pavement is causing real problems for people wanting to use the road.

“Cars are blocking the pavements, forcing pedestrians, and in particular anyone pushing a buggy or using a wheelchair or mobility scooter, into the road. Parked cars are also causing problems for other road users, with vehicles having to drive on the wrong side of the traffic island to get through.

“Parked cars are also causing problems for people trying to access the canal towpaths.

“Our priority is to make sure the road is safely usable by road users, in particular pedestrians, of all ages and abilities. While we have looked at alternative solutions, double yellow lines along this stretch of road is the only feasible option.”
