‘OUTDATED BELIEFS’: Bushey resident helps to combat myths around hospice care

Published on: 7th July 2025   |   By: Ellie Rose   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Bushey resident is transforming the way people perceive hospice care, after new research unveiled that the majority of people believe in “persistent myths”.

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care (RGPHC) is urging residents to find out what modern hospice care is, after its commissioned research revealed that 81 per cent of people in Hertfordshire have “outdated or inaccurate beliefs” about hospice care.

Most commonly, people associate a hospice with end-of-life services and fail to recognise the wide-ranging support available for patients and their families.

This includes emotional, practical and spiritual support, as well as medical care, which is available at the point of diagnosis.

The charity helps patients to live well during their illness by providing outpatient, inpatient, and Hospice at Home care.

Lorraine, who is from Bushey, was referred to RGPHC in 2024 and has accessed a wide range of services, including creative therapy and Living Well classes.

She said: “The word ‘hospice’ makes you think of a place where people go to spend their final days. I had no idea there were so many activities to get involved in before that happens!

“It’s just a shame people don’t know more about all the extra help they can give you, as it has transformed my life.”
