A group of parishioners, including Reverend Gary Norman, ran 10k around Rickmansworth Aquadrome to raise funds for St Mary’s Church.
The team – which also included David Gilbert, Kevin Jones, Troy Davies, Adam Shiels and Gary’s son Aidan Norman – raised £1,500 towards the running and maintenance costs of the church through the fundraiser on Saturday, June 29.
According to Rev Norman, the first St Mary’s 10k fundraiser took place three years ago when two members of the congregation decided to do a sponsored jog and found themselves cheered on by the wider community.
The number of participants tripled this year compared to the first run.
Rev Norman said: “I’m not quite sure how I ended up joining in, but it got me back into running again so I’m very pleased. It was a great way to raise money whilst getting fit.
“What you may not know is that churches – including the Church of England – do not any receive financial support from the state. So all the running costs, including the maintenance of the building (which is listed as Grade II), needs to be raised from the parishioners and the local community.”
