A Hatch End councillor’s petition, which was signed by more than 200,000 people, has failed in its mission to refuse the Mayor of London’s knighthood.
On Thursday, December 5, Conservative Hatch End councillor Matthew Goodwin-Freeman launched a petition after it was reported that Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan would be named in the New Year Honours List 2025.
However, on Monday, December 30, it was revealed that despite the petition receiving more than 200,000 signatures, Mayor Khan would receive a knighthood for political and public service.
Speaking to The Mail, cllr Goodwin-Freeman said: “To see Sadiq Khan be given a knighthood is a kick in the teeth for millions of Londoners. He refuses to take responsibility for his failures and shows no remorse or accountability.
“His track record of failure makes his knighthood even more confusing: crime is up, police in special measures, fire brigade in special measures, his share of council tax is up, the number of days of strikes is up, robberies are up… He’s a nightmare, not a knighted Mayor.”
Cllr Goodwin-Freeman has previously shared his disdain towards the Ultra Low Emission Zone expansion, crime numbers across the capital, and charges to the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels, all of which he blames on Mayor Khan.
Despite the criticism, Mayor Khan told the BBC that it was the “honour of my life to serve the city I love” and that he was “truly humbled” to have been made a knight.
When asked about cllr Goodwin-Freeman’s petition, Mayor Khan said: “Unless they’ve done a new year’s resolution, it won’t be the last time they criticise me.”
