A woman who spent four years as a commercial sales manager at Watford Football Club had a LinkedIn post go viral after explaining why she got a new job at Tesco.
Holly Maxwell, like many others during the coronavirus pandemic, was recently made redundant and was struggling to find a new job.
When she went to her local Tesco in Watford towards the end of March, she noticed that plenty of shelves were empty due to the significant number of shoppers in the store.
In her LinkedIn post, she said: “So on Thursday I went to my local Tesco and noticed the shelves were bare.
“I sat for two hours without an appointment to be seen, I even drove back with all my paperwork the same day to get me signed up – I didn’t even ask how much I was being paid.
“I started my induction and training yesterday on the tills, my first shift is tomorrow. I was and slightly embarrassed, to my shame, to say I felt ‘What has this come to that I had a great position at a great organisation and after being made redundant in January I am now temping’”.
Holly said her opinions quickly shifted when she met plenty of people of all ages and backgrounds, some of who had closed their own businesses and started working there during this difficult period.
She said they, like her, had “set their pride aside” as they want to earn money however they can in this climate.
She added that she feels guilty for initially wanting to keep her new job to herself, but has now had a change of heart.
She concluded: “I’m proud I put myself out there, I’m proud I’m starting a new skill and proud I am helping the economy in this difficult time!”
