NEW LOOK: CGI images of £6.9m community sports village in Garston released

Watford Borough Council (WBC) has published a number of computer-generated images (CGI) of the forthcoming Woodside Community Sports Village in Garston, due to begin construction in 2024.

The new centre will bring to life WBC’s 2015-25 goal to modernise and expand sports facilities across Watford.

Located at the northwest corner of Woodside Park where the historic Woodside Lodge and Farm buildings currently stand, the Sports Village will provide a new home to Watford’s boxing and cricket clubs, as well as local football sides. It will also offer expanded changing room facilities, energy-efficient infrastructure, and disability-friendly amenities for a range of other sporting groups.

There will also be a new multi-purpose hall overlooking the enclosed cricket pitch.

The buildings  blend modern architectural design with a heritage aesthetic, renovating and building on historical buildings already present in the park.

After years of little progress, the publication of the CGI images constitutes a promising update. The planning process started back 2017 but was substantially delayed due to rising costs.

Both the COVID-19 pandemic and growing inflation had forced WBC to rethink the viability of the project. Various councillors had also mentioned the complexity of navigating the competing priorities of different sports groups.

However, it was announced in January that the ambitious project would go ahead with a new budget of £6.9million.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “We are thrilled to take this leap forward with the release of these images, which showcase the potential of the project. These drawings offer a glimpse into the future, where excellent sports facilities and sustainability come together to create a vibrant community space. It will be great to see the boxing, football and cricket clubs at Woodside Playing Fields benefit from the improvements.”
