NEW IN TOWN: High Sheriff hopes ‘to bring people together’ during her year in office after Berkhamsted declaration

Published on: 5th May 2023   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: Uncategorized

The declaration service for the new High Sheriff of Hertfordshire was held in St Peter’s Church, Berkhamsted, last month.

High Sheriffs serve for a year and the office dates back to Saxon times, making it the oldest secular office in the United Kingdom after the crown. Key elements of the role include supporting the emergency services, the crown and the work of the judiciary, including judges, magistrates, tribunals, prisons and probation services.

New High Sheriff Liz Green, who lives in Tring, has volunteered for a number of Hertfordshire charities for 20 years and is an area co-ordinator for Shannon Trust, a charity working to improve literacy and numeracy in prisons and the community.

Speaking after her declaration, Liz said: “My theme for the year is ‘reading, writing and rehabilitation’. Many of us take reading for granted, and we don’t stop to think about the difficulties of practical day-to-day living of those who struggle to read.

“I hope to bring people together to enable us to improve literacy levels in Hertfordshire, and to help ex-offenders into work. I look forward to meeting many people who either work professionally or volunteer to help others across our Hertfordshire communities.”

The High Sheriff toured Dacorum on April 19 and visited Open Door community hub in Berkhamsted and Sunnyside Rural Trust in Northchurch.
