A pensioner and charity volunteer who is terrified of heights will brave a skydive next month.
Bushey resident Ian Banfield is something of a contradiction, as he is acrophobic yet has previously enjoyed gliding and flying light aircrafts as a hobby.
Speaking to BUSHEYnews, he said: “It’s really strange but heights never bothered me when I was flying; I think you just don’t have time to be scared because you’re busy concentrating, but put me on top of a ladder and I’m shaking with fear.”
Thankfully, Ian’s son James will be jumping with him in solidarity on Saturday, July 27.
The pair will jump 13,000ft for homelessness charity, New Hope. Ian is one of the charity’s regular volunteer drivers, helping to deliver donated food to people supported by New Hope.
Ian said: “I thought jumping out of a plane would be a great opportunity to overcome my fear of heights as well as raising some much-needed funds to help local people who have fallen on hard times.”
Rebecca Palmer, New Hope’s fundraising and communications manager, said: “New Hope’s fundraisers and volunteers, such as Ian, are essential to our work in preventing homelessness. We’d like to say a big thank you to Ian and everyone who sponsors him.”
