Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor recently visited a temple in North Watford to celebrate Tamil New Year.
On Monday, April 14, Mayor Taylor visited the Watford Velmurugan Temple to celebrate the New Year, also known as Puthandu.
April 14 marks the first day of the year in the Tamil calendar and is celebrated with the community cleaning up their homes, preparing trays of fruit and flowers, lighting up the family puja altar, and visiting local temples.
The Watford Velmurugan Temple originally began with small weekly Friday services at a local community centre, before moving to its current home on St Albans Road.
Mayor Taylor shared on his social media: “It was great attending the Watford Velmurugan Temple to celebrate the Tamil New Year.
“Wishing a happy and successful New Year to Tamils in Watford and beyond — Puthandu Vazthukal.
“As communities across the world celebrate their New Year traditions, I wish you all happiness, joy, and new beginnings this year. I would also like to wish Sikhs in Watford and beyond a happy Vaisakhi!”
