Regional qualifiers for the Riding for Disabled Association (RDA) took place in Penniwells, Elstree this June. Garston resident Jenny Bridger was part of the team that successfully qualified for the National competition which was held at Hartpury university and college between July 15 – 17.
Jenny competed in the Grade 6 Trot Dressage class, riding Tattoo and coming in second place. Jenny also entered the photography section of the arts and crafts, taking home the first place rosette for an emotive photo taken with her favourite Penniwells pony, Ana.
Jenny only became a rider after suffering a freak injury playing football five years ago. She suffered a Tibial Plateau fracture which has left her with ongoing nerve and muscle damage and has gone under eight operations to date.
Jenny told Garston News: “I will need a total knee replacement eventually.
“10 days before I broke it, I ran the Brighton marathon for the third time, and now I struggle to run very far, certainly not very fast, at all any more.
“The surgeon saved my leg so I can’t complain. It’s giving me a different challenge.”
Having struggled with mental health issues for over 20 years, volunteering with the RDA has helped Jenny regain her confidence and discover a connection with horses that has now helped her progress back into part time work.
