NATIONAL CHAMP: Garston resident wins national bowls title

A lifelong member of Garston Bowls club has been crowned a nation champion.

Jerry Rumball, 56, won the Bowls England National Senior Singles (Over 55s) in just his second year of being eligible. Jerry, who also takes on the role of greenkeeper, was born just three streets away from the club grounds off First Avenue and has played the game for 44 years.

Jerry competed against the best of the best across the year, firstly winning six rounds within Hertfordshire to progress to the Regional Finals. Victories over the Middlesex and Bedfordshire winners progressed him through to the National Quarter Finals. Wins against Durham, Kent and finally Warwickshire saw him crowned National Champion for 2022. 

Introduced to the sport by his parents, Phillip & Christine; his late mother, was a former runner up in the Ladies National Singles back in 1981. The title is Jerry’s second success at National level after Garston Bowls Club won the National Club Two Fours ten years ago. 

The club has seen other successes this year with members claiming four singles Hertfordshire titles and Hertfordshire Triples title. 

Glenn Williams, who won the Blue Ribband Singles event and was part of the triumvirate that won the Triples, spoke glowingly of the club’s recent success.

He said: “As a club, Garston also retained the Hertfordshire Club Team Championship title for 2022. This victory makes us 12 games undefeated in this event. Garston also claimed the Hertfordshire County League trophy sponsored by MK Ginder & Sons. 

“New membership enquiries are welcome from people of all ages, genders and abilities!”
