A mother of two from Garston starred 5Star’s Rich Kids Go Skint, a programme inviting ‘rich kids’ to live with families who struggle to live on low incomes.
Charmaine Sangari, 34, was joined by Freddie, a 20-year-old property development student from Chelsea.
Freddie, who went to a £36,000-a-year boarding school, said he wanted to find out why certain people are living in accommodation “too small” for them.
Freddie spent the weekend at Charmaine’s home with her two children, Sean-Amari, 4, and Shayla-Rose, 2 with a disposable income of £12 a week.
Three years ago she was left homeless with her one-year-old son after her marriage fell apart. During this she found out she was pregnant again.
Sitting down with Charmaine, Freddie asks her how she ended up in her situation.
She said on the programme: “When I separated from my husband three years ago, I couldn’t afford to live where we were living on my own so I was registered homeless and I had to go into a hostel. I was with weirdos and drug addicts. I was living there for about 16 months.
“Me and Sean had one room, maybe no bigger than this garden and then two weeks living here I found out I was pregnant again.
“I chose to see this as my making point rather than my breaking point and I literally chose to find anything to be positive about and I chose not to complain about my situation.
“I saw these houses were being built and one day I came and just sat outside them and I was like ‘I wish I could have one’. Then about three hours later I got a call saying you’ve been housed, which one do you want?’”.
Before leaving the family, Freddie gave Sean a special airplane and a Science Museum pass for an exhibition.
