New parking controls will operate in the Moneyhill area of Rickmansworth from Monday, December 9, following complaints of inconsiderate parking.
The controlled parking zone will operate from 8.30am to 6.30pm from Monday to Saturday, during which drivers will need a valid permit to park.
Parking will be available in permit parking bays and short stay ‘Pay By Plate’ will see parking bays available for shoppers and other visitors, with the first hour free.
The complaints that prompted the restrictions accused drivers of parking in the area for free while commuting by train to other areas.
Some local businesses, however, have slammed the parking changes.
Speaking on behalf of the shopkeepers, Michael Charnock from Decor Scene said: “This is just a tax on Moneyhill businesses. We pay for this scheme that we don’t need, the council gets the cash and doesn’t even spend it on extra enforcement!”
Rickmansworth Town Conservative councillor Mike Sims said: “The changes to parking locally will mean fewer parking spaces and more costs for businesses and residents.
“The area needs investment, but this shows they see it as a cash cow to take money out of and spend on projects elsewhere.”
Councillor Sarah Nelmes, Three Rivers District Council’s lead member for general public services, said: “This new scheme will help people at local addresses to find parking spaces more easily during the day and increase the turnover of parking for shoppers and visitors.
“By prioritising parking for people who need it most and preventing all-day parking in residential roads by non-residents, we are also improving the experience and safety for people travelling locally, providing more space to manoeuvre and better visibility at road junctions.”
