MENTAL HEALTH: Bushey woman offers training on World Suicide Prevention Day

Published on: 10th September 2021   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

A suicide first aid and prevention trainer from Bushey has shared some powerful words with BUSHEYnews today, (Friday, September 10) which is World Suicide Prevention Day.

This year, the international theme is ‘Creating Hope Through Action”, which aims to empower people with the confidence to engage with the complexity of ‘hope’.

Hope can be fundamental in our most difficult times. Suicide is a major global public health issue affecting people of all ages from all walks of life.

Caroline Cooper, a Suicide First Aid and Prevention trainer from Bushey said: “I work with organisations to address the misconceptions of suicide and reduce the stigma surrounding mental ill health.

“We need to get people talking about suicide and taking action to maintain good mental health. Engaging in these conversations and providing ‘hope’ for the future can help save lives.

“We can all make a difference – prevention must happen in schools, in workplaces and in local community organisations.”

There were 5,691 suicides registered in England and Wales in 2019 with over 75 per cent of these deaths among men following a consistent trend back to the 1990’s.

What these figures and numbers cannot reflect is the invisible impact of suicide. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects friends, families and communities who struggle to understand and make sense of their loss.

Yet suicide is preventable, spotting the early warning signs and openly talking about suicidal thoughts can be the difference between life and death.
