Chalfont St Peter residents have expressed their dismay after the Co-op announced the closure of its store in the village.

The shop in Market Place will close in early spring as the landlord has decided not to renew the lease.

Rumours are now circulating that the building could be developed into apartments, but no planning application has been submitted.

Resident Richard Churn took to social media to share his dismay at the news.

He said: “Just heard that the Co-op store in Chalfont St Peter is closing. Another nail in the community’s coffin and very sad for the people who work there.”

Another resident, Karen Wright, said: “This is a massive loss for the village. At what point does the good of the village come first?”

Marie Cavanagh, representative for the village’s Chamber of Commerce, said: “The Co-op will be missed for the kindness they show the community. They always give raffle prizes and fund community projects. They will be greatly missed.”

A spokesperson for Co-op said: “In Market Place, our lease expires, and the store will close in March. Our priority is to fully support colleagues, who have been informed, and we would like to thank the community for its support of the store.”
