MARVELOUS MERVYN: Chorleywood golfer scores second hole-in-one aged 91

A 91-year-old golfer from Chorleywood is delighted to have scored the second hole-in-one of his career.

Mervyn O’Brart was enjoying a casual golf game at Chorleywood Golf Club with his friends on October 3, when he approached the third hole. The amateur golfer took his shot and headed to the green. However, his group quickly managed to locate their balls but could not find Mervyn’s.

This was when they looked into the hole and realised that Mervyn had only gone and scored a hole-in-one, for the second time in half a century of playing the sport.

Speaking to Chorleywood News, Mervyn explained: “I’ve been playing for 50 years, only socially, as I enjoy playing and enjoy the company.

“I was very surprised! Most golfers will never achieve one hole-in-one in their life!”

Ironically, Mervyn’s first hole-in-one was secured at the same 129-yard hole, back in October 2020.

As the tradition states, Mervyn celebrated by buying a round for the entire club after his game. Luckily, it was a quiet day at the club, so Mervyn’s wallet didn’t suffer too much. The golfer said that despite being 91, he could “still eat and drink for the country”, so celebrated with a pint also.

Peter Rodwell, secretary at Chorleywood Golf Club said: “Mervyn has been an active member of our club for a good many years, winning his first trophy, the Club Championship Bronze Medal in 1994, and winning our Seniors Cup at least once in each of the last four decades.”
