To commemorate 50 years since Bhaktivedanta Manor was founded, artist Wendy Phillips teamed up with more than 400 volunteers to install a mosaic at the famous Hindu temple near Radlett.
Consisting of three large panels that flow into one another, the mosaic depicts some of the activities carried out at the temple. In the first panel, devotees play music and cook for the community; in the second, they perform the ritual of puja; and the third illustrates harmony with all living creatures.
The mosaic was put together using glass, porcelain and mirrored tiles which reflect the sunlight. Overall, the project took more than eight months to complete.
Manor spokesperson Guru Carana Padma Dasi said: “The idea for a mosaic came about after I saw some of Wendy’s work in a village in Somerset. I was inspired to see something similar at the manor.
“The community shared many stories during the creative process, so there is a lot of laughter, joy and healing embedded in the mosaic.
Dean Russell, MP for Watford, said that it was a “true pleasure and honour” to unveil the mosaic at the end of November.
