A woman who lives with her partner on a boat in Apsley Marina has continued to bring joy to the community time and time again.
Miriam Rai has become known within the community by several names including ‘the boat lady and ‘the fairy lady’ for her efforts to cheer up the community.
At the beginning of the first lockdown, Miriam set up a trough for children to plant their own sunflowers and give them something to do.
She said: “When the lockdown started, everyone was frightened and scared and I thought it was a big thing for children, so I got them to plant sunflower seeds.
“I thought I would only end up with a dozen, but I ended up with 52.”
Miriam hasn’t stopped there, as her latest project involved asking the community to decorate bunting which she will then put up in the local area.
She said: “It’s just to cheer people up really with something to do. The bunting is a visual and creative thing that they can put their own touch on.
“It’s all up to their imagination and what they want to do.”
Miriam has received a wealth of positive feedback from members of the local community.
She said: “One lady said I was ‘a rainbow in this black and wide world’ and another told me that I ‘bring sunshine to the marina’. It’s lovely”
Miriam will also be decorating her boat again this Christmas to keep her title of the most decorated boat in the marina.
