MAKING HISTORY: Watford Museum receives £2m to ‘bring town’s unique heritage to life’

Published on: 31st October 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

A £2.4million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund will help Watford Museum to bring the town’s vibrant history to life.

This money will support the creation of an exciting and interactive new heritage service in the Grade II listed Town Hall, as part of Watford Borough Council’s Town Hall Quarter programme.

The exciting plans will see the museum move to the front of the Town Hall, including the 1930s listed committee rooms. The new site will feature a variety of galleries, including Introducing Watford, a sensory journey through the town’s past from its ancient roots to industrial boom; Sporting Watford, which celebrates the town’s sporting legacy; and We Are Watford, which focuses on the diverse lives of local people.

Speaking following the news, Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “This funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund will bring Watford’s unique heritage to life in a way that’s fun and accessible to everyone.

“It’s a huge vote of confidence in Watford and the Town Hall Quarter programme, which we hope will be echoed by the delivery of the £16million of Levelling Up Funding promised by the last government almost a year ago.”

Speaking to WATFORDnews, Paul Stacey, associate director of environment and communities at Watford Borough Council, said: “As we prepare for the new museum in Watford, our team is excitedly working through our collection, uncovering hidden gems and curating fresh stories.

“We’re collaborating closely with the community, gathering memories and artifacts that will shape exhibitions celebrating Watford’s diverse heritage. Together, we’re creating an inclusive space for everyone to enjoy.”

Work on the new museum will start in early 2025. To keep up to date with progress and the latest news, visit www.watfordtownhallquarter.com
