Works will widen the entrance of Sheppey’s Lane, off Bedmond Road, to make it accessible for those with mobility issues, according to Abbots Langley and Bedmond councillor Vicky Edwards.
A Bedmond resident contacted cllr Edwards in September, requesting more access to Bedmond’s countryside for those with mobility issues. The resident’s son, who uses a mobility scooter, is unable to access the many rights of way which criss-cross Bedmond’s rural landscape.
This included the right of way on Sheppey’s Lane, which has a locked vehicle gate and a narrow side entrance for those on foot.
Once past the gate, there are many country walks to Abbots Langley, Bedmond and Kings Langley, however, the current entrance to this right of way is too narrow for a mobility scooter to pass through.
Cllr Edwards met with Hertfordshire County Council’s access project manager on Sheppey’s Lane to discuss the access issues and the importance of providing all residents, including those with mobility issues, the means to enjoy the countryside and the benefits that go with it.
It was agreed that the entrance would be widened to allow those using mobility scooters to pass onto Sheppey’s Lane. A motorbike inhibitor will also be added to the entrance to stop trespassers on motorbikes and quad bikes churning up the local footpaths and fields.
Once the works have been completed, Hertfordshire Rights of Way will be working with the resident to see if any further improvements can be made to make the footpath more accessible.
