MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Kings Langley litter picking champion nominated for BBC award

Published on: 25th August 2023   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Kings Langley resident’s superb environmental work has led to a nomination for the BBC’s Make a Difference Awards.

Sarah Burgess started Just1bag2020 with her family when she was based in the USA. The goal was to see if they could collect 2,020 bags of litter over the course of the year.

The campaign snowballed and the group swelled, resulting in more than 24,000 bags of litter being collected over the year across a number of continents.

This year, Sarah has led another campaign, #23in2023. Her ambition is for 23 schools across the globe to sign up to litter picks and to get involved on National Clean Up Day, which takes place on Saturday, September 16.

Sarah said: “Now we’re back here in the UK, we still go out and pick up a bag of litter as many times as we can, which is usually four or five times a week. My kids went on a walk to the Common recently and came back with a bag; I didn’t even have to say anything!

“Kings Langley is such a phenomenal community, which I don’t think we really appreciated until we came back last year; it’s full of lovely, wonderful people trying their best.

“We’re just trying to raise awareness really of the fact that you don’t have to be a volunteer; you can just pick it up.

“It’s weird to be nominated for something which literally every single person can do. There’s nothing special about what I’ve done!”

Nominated by her husband, Sarah has made the final shortlist for the Green Award in the BBC Make a Difference Awards.

The award ceremonies are taking place across England throughout the month, with Sarah’s category set to be announced on September 17.
