The Liberal Democrats have sent shockwaves through the country with their remarkable win in the Chesham and Amersham by-election yesterday (Thursday, June 17).
The seat, which has belonged to the Tories for its entire 47-year history, was taken by Lib Dem candidate Sarah Green, who won with a resounding 21,517 votes.
Lib Dem Leader Ed Davey has described the shock win as the best by-election victory in the party’s history, and even knocked over a literal “blue wall” in front of his peers to symbolise the downfall of the Conservatives.
Sarah Green MP, whose win gave her party a huge swing of 25 points, said following the victory: “This campaign has showed that no matter where you live, or how supposedly safe a constituency may appear to be, if you want a Liberal Democrat member of parliament, you can have a Liberal Democrat member of parliament.
“Tonight, the voice of Chesham and Amersham is unmistakable. Together, we have said enough is enough, we will be heard and this government will listen.”
MP Green has said that during her time in the seat, she will prioritise:
- Making sure small and medium sized businesses are supported to recover from the pandemic
- fighting to protect our environment and green spaces for future generations
- Getting more support for our local public services.
