LOVELY TOUCH: School trio from Pinner helped organise fundraising day to fight Australian bushfires

Published on: 15th February 2020   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Three Year 4 pupils from a Pinner primary were so distressed by the bushfires in Australia they inspired their school to run a fundraising day for the organisation battling the blazes.

Brooke, Lanti and Molly, from Pinner Wood School, came up with the idea of raising money for the Australian Wildfire Rescue Organisation (WIRE) and combined it with the school’s Crazy Hair Day raising £462.

After seeing the devastating impact the bushfires were having on the wildlife and the environment out in Australia, the trio approached staff at the school asking if they could do some sort of fundraising which blew their headteacher, Miss Marriott, away.

Speaking to the magazine, Miss Marriott said: “It was a great day and a wonderful opportunity for children to make a real difference on an international issue.

“The girls approached the staff, as they had been watching the news over Christmas and asked if they could fundraise. We are always happy to support pupil’s ideas and were so amazed by the result.

“We managed to raise £462.02 which can be used by WIRE to treat those affected animals and ultimately release them back into the wild. We shared the news about the bushfires in the whole school assembly and the difference that they could make.”

As an incentive for good behaviour by students, the school held a crazy hair/non-school day on January 31 and were asked for an optional donation of £1 for the collection.

Brooke said: “We really felt sorry for the poor animals and I’m very proud of what we have done.”

Lanti said: “I feel very proud of myself because we are trying to make a difference for the animals.”

Molly said: “We needed to do something about it as these beautiful animals are getting hurt.”
