Tributes have been paid to former Watford Observer sports editor Oliver Phillips who sadly passed away on February 2.

The journalist, who passed away at the age of 81, was well known amongst the Watford community and reported on Watford FC for more than 40 years.

Oli also briefly worked as a freelancer for MyLocalNews, with editor-in-chief Nik Allen speaking fondly of him.

He said: “The readers loved the nostalgia column he wrote for us.

“I met him on a few occasions. We met for our 30-minute meetings and they always turned into hours. He always had time for us. He didn’t just have a love for the football club; he loved the town.”

Watford FC were among those paying tribute. They had recently renamed the media suite at Vicarage Road Stadium in honour of Oli, who had reported on more than 2,000 matches and spent most of his career reporting from football press boxes.

Scott Duxbury, chairman and CEO of Watford FC, said: “I was very sad to hear of Oli’s passing.

“Colleagues recently collaborated with the Watford Observer to ensure there would be a lasting tribute to his extraordinarily long-time reporting on Watford FC, and we were only too happy to name our media suite in Oli’s name – something I understand he was humbled to learn of.”

The club also paid tribute to Oli at their home game on Saturday, February 11.

Radio presenter Lee Partridge also paid tribute, writing on Twitter: “Sad to hear of the passing of Watford FC legend Oli Phillips.

“Covering Watford FC games with his honest way for an incredible 40 years and easily one of the most knowledgeable fans ever.

“Met Oli a number of times and a top bloke. Thoughts and love go to his family.”
