‘LIFELINE’: Petition launched over closure of supermarket café in Hatch End

Published on: 7th May 2025   |   By: Kelly Pells   |   Category: Featured

Residents have warned that the proposed closure of a local supermarket café is taking away a “lifeline” for the older community.

Earlier this year, Morrisons announced the closure of 52 of its cafés, including the one in Hatch End.

Local residents have now launched a petition, which states: “I urge you to join me in the fight to keep the heart of our communities thriving. Our local Morrisons cafés are more than just places to buy food or a quick coffee. They are safe spaces, community gathering points, and sources of local employment. Morrisons’ decision to shut this establishment threatens the fabric of our communities as well.

“They are an integral part of our local and national economy. Denying their right to operate would translate into massive job losses and destabilise local economies. Join me in letting Morrisons know that we value the integral role these establishments play in our lives.”

One resident, who often visits the Hatch End café with her elderly relative, told Pinner News: “It’s such a shame. We go to the café every week and it’s the only time my elderly uncle gets out the house.

“I know a lot of elderly people go there because it gives them the chance to meet up without having to spend a lot of money. It’s a bit of a lifeline really.

“Some of them would probably find a chain coffee shop quite confusing and expensive, so without the café, they’ve got nowhere to go.”

Morrisons have been contacted for comment.
