A Hatch End PE teacher and former student reunited on BBC Radio London to chat about the incredible journey of a football star who once walked the school’s corridors.
On Wednesday, May 14, Mr Weir, head of PE at Hatch End High School, was interviewed by former student and presenter Aaron Paul.
Their chat reflected on the incredible journey of Tyrick Mitchell, also a former pupil at the school from 2012 to 2016 and now a professional footballer for Crystal Palace.
Reminiscing about the school in days gone by, Aaron asked Mr Weir about the school’s reaction to the football star’s journey.
In the interview, Mr Weir said: “[Tyrick Mitchell] was a really good student and loved his PE.
“He was a big part of the football team, and we were really successful under the Midas touch of Mr Mitchell.
“He played as a striker back then and had a great attitude. It was great to see him develop and where he is now.”
Tyrick’s legacy has continued alongside his career, as Mr Weir shared that he remains in contact with the school and still visits staff and students.
Though Aaron remembers a big concrete ground in the middle of the school, Mr Weir shared that this has since been renovated into a grass football pitch.
He said: “It is brilliant and that has further increased the quality of the players here and will hopefully bring more silverware to the school.”
