LEFT OUT: Bushey excluded from ULEZ scrappage scheme funding

Published on: 19th August 2023   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: Uncategorized

Bushey residents have been excluded from receiving financial support under controversial plans for the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

Residents with vehicles that fail to meet emission and safety standards set by Transport for London (TfL) will have to pay a £12.50 fee per day to enter Greater London from August 29.

On August 3, it was confirmed that all Londoners with a non-compliant vehicle would be eligible for up to £2,000 to pay for a replacement.

Despite Bushey brushing shoulders with the expanded zone, residents are ineligible to receive this same support.

Bushey resident Amanda Tropp only lives one mile away from the new ULEZ boundary, and often crosses the border for work, travel, and to see friends and family.

She told BUSHEYnews: “Most of my life is in the ULEZ. Many surrounding areas can be as expensive to live in than Greater London, like Bushey. So it’s just as difficult for us to buy a new car as it is someone living a five-minute drive away from me.

“The point of ULEZ is to reduce carbon emissions and have a greener planet. The best way to do that is to cut down on individual and private travel and increase public and mass travel.

“Bushey has one train station with very limited parking. It’s also expensive to use.

“It’s clear that TfL and [Mayor of London Sadiq] Khan don’t want to invest in public transport outside of Greater London. But until we do, ULEZ is going to harm those who can’t afford new cars, those who can’t afford to use the train, and those who are unable to use the broken bus system.”

A spokesperson for Mayor Khan said: “The Mayor is urging councils surrounding London to join his calls for the government to fund a scrappage scheme for Bushey and the Home Counties – just as it has done for other areas implementing Clean Air Zones.”
