A Watford-based American football club are preparing for a momentous season after securing their place in the top division for the very first time.

The Hertfordshire Cheetahs are based at Sun Sports & Social Club and were formed in 1986, making them one of the oldest American football clubs in the country. Since then, the Cheetahs have continued to grow and now offer an adult team, a women’s team, and several youth teams.

For the first time in their history, the club are now preparing to play in the Premiership South division.

Speaking to WATFORDnews, former head coach and current defensive coordinator Craig Barnes said: “We’ve had a very successful few years, becoming the Division 2 South league champions in 2018, having an unbeaten season last year, taking the Division 1 National title, and earning promotion to the Premier Division.”

The Division 1 final was no straightforward affair for the Cheetahs. The team entered the second half against the Northumberland Vikings 21-0 down, before a triumphant uphill climb resulted in their 27-21 victory in overtime.

As the Cheetahs begin preparation for this historic season, Craig is urging residents who are interested in the sport to come and watch the team play.

Craig continued: “We would love for the people of Watford to come and support us. Details of our games will soon be on our socials!”
