‘IRRESPONSIBLE’: Abbots Langley residents worry over health of dogs in boiling weather

Published on: 27th July 2021   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

Abbots residents have been taking to social media to express their concerns for dogs that are being walked in hot weather.

During the recent heatwave, where temperatures reached over 30 degrees, a number of Abbots residents were furious to see dogs being walked by owners.

One resident wrote on Facebook: “I cannot believe horrible, irresponsible people walking their dogs in this heat. It’s cruel, unnecessary and selfish.”

While some residents felt it wasn’t their place to tell dog owners what they should or shouldn’t do, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) warn that dogs are at risk from severe overheating.

Dogs can only sweat through their footpads and cool themselves by panting. Soaring temperatures can cause heat stress and be physically damaging or fatal.

Dogs’ footpads also easily burn on heated roads, pavement and sand.
