Building works to install a state-of-the-art PET-CT scanner at a cancer centre in Northwood are well underway.
The works to build the scanner as well as improved patient areas at the Paul Strickland Cancer Centre are progressing rapidly and marks the biggest upgrade in the centre’s history.
The new Siemens Biograph Vision 600 PET-CT scanner will replace the two existing scanners and will be faster and produce higher-definition images to aid cancer diagnosis and monitoring.
Bruno Ferreira, superintendent for PET-CT at Paul Strickland Scanner Centre, said: “It’s a very exciting project—you don’t often see such significant upgrades. This is a huge project but will be rewarding when it has been completed.”
Having just one PET-CT scanner instead of two will free up a significant amount of space, which will be used to construct new cannulation and uptake bays—clinical areas where patients are injected with a radiopharmaceutical agent (before their scan) and wait for it to be dispersed through their body before they are scanned.
