A 14-year-old swimmer from Northwood is making a splash among the country’s top athletes after her incredible success in a recent national competition.
Earlier this year, Mia Garner (pictured) gave an outstanding performance in the British National Championships. She qualified for three events – 100m Backstroke, 200m Individual Medley and 200m Backstroke – and smashed her personal bests in all of them.
In the 100m Backstroke, the young swimmer powered through to the finals and came in 5th place. Harrow Swimming Club, where Mia is a member, said it was “an outstanding result in a highly competitive field”.
In the 200m Individual Medley, Mia showed her all-around ability and finished 14th on the national table.
But it was the 200m Backstroke that took Mia’s skills to another level. Utilising her fierce determination and power, she produced an incredible performance and secured a bronze medal after finishing in just over two minutes.
Now, Mia has been selected for the National Age Group Development Programme 2025/26 which, according to England Talent, is the highest level of support young athletes can receive.
The programme is split into four zones and is designed to help young swimmers achieve their goals. The hope is to make it all the way to the British Swimming World Class Pathway, where the successful applicants will become fully funded athletes.
Head coach Daniel Andrawos has been credited for his training with Mia, as his guidance was key to Mia’s swimming success on the national stage.
A spokesperson for Harrow Swimming Club said: “This is a huge milestone not only for Mia but also for the club.
“Reaching two national finals, setting back-to-back personal bests, and earning a place on the podium is a testament to her work ethic, maturity, and dedication in training.
“We are incredibly proud of Mia and all she has achieved. The future is bright, and this is just the beginning.
“Our aim is to nurture a supportive environment, helping each swimmer to reach their full potential while enjoying the sport.”
