Tributes have been paid to a renowned musician from Rickmansworth who played with artists from Sir Cliff Richard to Kate Bush.
Danny Thompson passed away at age 86 on Tuesday, September 23.
In 1967, he formed the folk rock band Pentangle with drummer Terry Cox, guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, and vocalist Jacqui McShee. Their first public performance was a sold-out show at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
The hit single Light Flight, from Pentangle’s second album, became popular when it was used as the theme music for the BBC show Take Three Girls. This wasn’t Danny’s first brush with TV fame, as he had also played on the recording for the theme music for Thunderbirds.
He later released several solo albums and an award-winning wildlife documentary, A Passion to Protect.
Rock band The The were among those to pay tribute to Danny, posting on X: “Very sad to hear of the passing of the legendary bass player Danny Thompson. I had the pleasure of working with Danny on my albums Mind Bomb and Dusk. He was a wonderful, warm man and a brilliant musician who’d worked with such a variety of artists, including two of my favourite singer/songwriters, Tim Buckley and Nick Drake. RIP Danny.”
On her website, singer-songwriter Kate Bush posted: “You never just worked with Danny. You also worked with his double bass he called Victoria. The two of them were joined at the hip and together they were the most fascinating storytellers – earthy and of the wild.
“Danny was the sweetest, dearest man and a real character. A rare and special treasure.
“I remember seeing him play live many times with the brilliant John Martyn and I never dreamed that I would get to work with such an incredible talent.
“Thank you Danny for setting the work on fire with Victoria. I’m going to miss you so much!”
