I DO! Abbots Langley hairdresser proposes to boyfriend as part of leap year tradition

An Abbots Langley hairdresser has followed an age-old tradition by proposing to her boyfriend on a leap year.

Katie, who runs Hairshare salon in Abbots Langley, was inspired by one of her clients to propose to her boyfriend on leap day on February 29.

The leap year tradition of women proposing to their partners dates back to 5th century Ireland. The tradition has now spread across the globe.

After sadly losing her father last year, Katie realised that “life is too short” and decided to propose to her boyfriend, Daniel Martin, an electrical manager from Watford.

Daniel was “shocked” as Katie had always said she “wasn’t too fussed about marriage”.

She said: “He was actually planning to propose to me in April when we’re going to Brighton for his birthday, so I sort of beat him to it!”

The couple, who have been together for two years, met on the dating app Bumble – where women make the first move.

The couple were on holiday in Scotland and had been watching the TV show Married at First Sight until late in the evening. Katie decided it was time to seize the moment at midnight.

Instead of getting down on one knee, she delegated the duty to the couple’s black pug, Albert. The dog was dressed in a bandana which read ‘will daddy marry mummy?’ Daniel’s answer was a resounding yes.

The pair plan to marry in November next year at Gretna Green in Scotland, traditionally the site of runaway marriages, in homage to Katie’s dad who married his wife there five years ago.

Katie said: “I thought, if he can’t give me away, I’ll get married somewhere where I’ll feel his presence.”
