HYMN OF HOPE: Croxley resident releases Milennium Hymn

Published on: 17th April 2020   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

As the COVID-19 crisis shows no signs of abating, despite isolation, a number of individuals have been able to provide various musical initiatives which can be shared across the world.

One such person is Croxley Green resident, Rilla Paterson, who has offered a message of hope for the future in the form of a hymn, which she published on YouTube earlier this month.

The hymn was originally written in 1999 for the Millennium, as an entry in a competition run by St Paul’s Cathedral.

The rules required that the words and the music must be submitted as separate entries, but they had to be similar to the well-known favourite Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.

Rilla submitted two entries, one for each category. Neither of them got anywhere in the competition so Rilla’s Hymn for the Millennium has been sitting in a cupboard for twenty years.

But a fortnight before Easter Day, Rilla heard the strains of Love Divine emanating from the radio and remembered the poem she had written.

She said: “I realised that the message of hope for a better world would be equally applicable when we emerge on the other side of this devastating event.”

Accordingly, she contacted two professional singers sharing the same accommodation, and by layering up the voices the three of them were able to produce an audio track in four-part harmony with organ accompaniment.

It was released in record time and published on YouTube on Easter Day.
