HISTORIC WIN: Shenley Cricket Club kids are national champions

Published on: 16th September 2019   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

Shenley Village Cricket Club have become Hertfordshire County’s first side ever to win the ECB’s Vitality U15 T20 National Club Competition.

Having won the tournament two years ago as U13’s, the team become only the second ever team in the tournament’s 44 years to win the event at U13 and U15, the only year groups that the ECB runs the National competition.

Shenley represented the London and South East region having won the regional final on the July 29 in a close contest against Slough Cricket Club.

On August 12, at Rugby School in Warwickshire, the four remaining teams out of 1,451 clubs who entered the tournament were ready to compete to become national champions.

Shenley CC took on Walmley CC (Warwickshire) and restricted them to 82-9 off their 20 overs, an outstanding effort against a quality outfit.

Shenley won the match with just two balls to spare by six wickets with Will Poynton scoring 24 not out off 23 balls and Ben Beesley finishing on 27 not out.

Taunton Dean won the toss in the final and put Shenley into bat, who posted a very demanding 160-3 off their 20 overs.

As expected, Taunton Deane came out hard and tried to score off every ball, however the opening attack bowled well and they fell behind the run rate immediately, the pressure mounted and the opening bat proved to be the first of four run outs.

In the end, Shenley bowled Taunton Dean out for exactly 100 in 18 overs.

An amazing performance with superb bowling, batting and fielding displays throughout the team secured this fantastic achievement.

A club spokesperson said: “64 parents, grandparents and boys all went back to celebrate at the White Horse in Shenley, which is a testimony to the amazing tight bond that has grown amongst the whole squad and their parents since this adventure started in back in 2012.

“During this time these boys made seven Hertfordshire County Cup Finals Days in a row, winning four and have now twice won the National ECB Final.”
