HIGH-FLYERS: Northwood RAF cadets compete in national squadron competition

A group of young air force cadets from two Northwood schools took part in a tough contest between other squadrons across the UK.

The team of 13 cadets was from the Combined Cadet Force RAF Section of St Helen’s School and Merchant Taylors’ School (MTS) and were led by Flight Lieutenant Shirley of MTS and supported by Civilian Instructor Heavyside of St Helen’s.

Together, on Sunday, December 3, they headed to RAF Halton in Aylesbury to compete in the Royal Air Squadron Trophy, a prestigious event that tests the skills and knowledge of cadets from across the country.

It consists of seven challenges, including uniform inspection, drill, RAF general knowledge, aircraft recognition, first aid, air rifle shooting, and a leadership/command task.

Having trained together for several weeks in preparation for the event, the young cadets had to demonstrate both their own proficiency and teamwork in these skills, but also their enthusiasm for the activities.

A spokesperson for St Helen’s School said: “The cadets performed well in all the challenges and received positive feedback from the judges and staff. As a school community we congratulate them on their efforts.”
