It’s been just over a year since local hero, Dayaram Nakrani, protected his family and business from burglars in Shenley – we wanted to see how he was doing.
Dayaram’s Shenley Post Office on London Road, which he lives just above with his family, was broken into by two burglars one early morning last year while the family were asleep.
Mrs Nakrani was quick to call the police when the burglars’ noises woke them up, but it was Dararam’s quick thinking that fended the criminals off.
He challenged them and shouted to the burglars that “police are on their way” before they departed the scene, only managing to steal a few bottles of vodka and whiskey.
Following RadlettNews’s coverage of the incident, Dayaram was won the Outstanding Bravery category of the MyLocalHero awards.
Speaking about the impact the incident’s left on him and his family, Dararam said: “People still remember the events and do ask every now and then how we are. We were so taken aback by the support we got from everyone in the community, which gave us more strength to keep going.
“We have had shutters installed on both shop front, so we feel safer and aren’t as worried about our safety. Luckily we have had no more major incidents, but there have been a two small ones during the shop’s opening hours, where people ask for tobacco and then grab and run off without paying. These have been reported to the police but are hard to follow up.
“Unfortunately with most robberies they remain unsolved and are forgotten, but we got lucky, as both of the culprits have been caught by the police.
“We have put the behind us and are back to the routine of running our Shenley Store and Post Office.”
