SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Hemel Hempstead athlete joins Leadership Team

Published on: 26th October 2022   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Hemel Hempstead resident has been elected to Special Olympics GB Athletic Leadership Team (ALT).

Special Olympics GB, which represents the voices of many thousands of athletes living with intellectual disabilities across Great Britain and champions an ethos of inclusion, welcomed Hemel Hempstead’s Mitch Camp after a successful interview and selection process.

Mitch, who trains and competes with Special Olympics St Albans and specialises in the long jump, is one of five new members of the ALT, and hopes to help to raise awareness for the charity by putting himself out there and making a difference.

Mitch was diagnosed with a Craniofacial Syndrome called Apert Syndrome (AS) from birth. AS affects the way in which the skull is formed, as well as the hands and feet. Mitch underwent multiple surgeries growing up, including surgery to narrow his feet.

In 2015, Mitch discovered “nothing was impossible” when he won gold in the long jump at the World Games in LA and claimed other medals in track events.

Tom Casson, who oversees the ALT at Special Olympics GB, said: “On behalf of everyone at Special Olympics GB, we’d like to say huge congratulations to the new members of our ALT.

“Special Olympics GB prides itself on the fact that our athletes sit at the very heart of Special Olympics GB and this group are fundamental to that. Not only is the ALT a great way for our athletes to develop leadership skills and showcase their talents, both on and off the field of play, but they also ensure that the voice of our athletes is heard in every decision we make as an organisation.

“Our five new athletes are shining examples of the values which embody Special Olympics GB, and we are excited to be supporting them on their journey.”
