HELP NOW: Watford nursery owner urges government to support sector amid ‘turmoil’

The owner of a Watford nursery is pleading with the government to provide more funding for the early years sector.

Rob Danks, manager and owner of Honey’s Nest, said the sector is in “turmoil” and urgently needs support.

Nurseries are among many businesses struggling with an increase in bills and a lack of support from the government amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Speaking to WatfordNews, Robert said nurseries are crucial for children’s development, but many are oversubscribed and underfunded.

He said: “It’s not just in our setting; it’s everyone. There’s either a lack of funding or it’s given and then taken away.

“We built our nursery from scratch and tried to build it for the parents. What nurseries do is crucial for the future and we need the backing of the government.

“We don’t know what’s round the corner. It’s scary.”

As well as providing an invaluable service for children, the nursery also contributes to the local community. Robert explained that the nursery recently organised a fundraising drive to support a local food bank.

He said: “We decided to support the community. Watford has a high number of children in need, so we decided to work with the local food bank.

“In four days, we gathered quite a substantial amount; we called the food bank and they showed up in 10 minutes. It shows the need for donations currently.”
