HAWK-EYED: St Albans park receives a flying visit from rare bird

Published on: 5th February 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

If you were to name something rare in St Albans, you might say an empty pub on a Friday night or a quiet St Peter’s Street on a Saturday.

However, an even rarer sighting has occurred in Verulamium Park.

On Saturday, January 11, Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust report that a yellow-browed warbler has been sighted wintering around Verulamium Lake in St Albans.

Usually, at this time of year, the bird will have migrated from its breeding ground of Siberia to south-east Asia.

Debbie Bigg, communications officer at Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, said: “It’s a privilege to see this rare bird in such an accessible public space.”

The warbler was reported to be darting in and out of the reeds at the edge of the lake, looking for food such as caterpillars and other small insects.

The small green warbler, with its distinctive yellow ‘eyebrow’, delighted bird watchers, wildlife photographers and the general public, who were able to see the unusual visitor at close range.
