Hatch End library facing the axe

Hatch End Library is one of four libraries facing the axe, as part of Harrow Council’s cost-cutting measures. The authority has launched a consultation about the future of libraries in Harrow. It is asking for views on three options, the first one being the closure of Hatch End Library in the Harrow Arts Centre, Edgware Library, North Harrow Library and Rayners Lane Library. The council estimates such a move would save an estimated £480,000 a year. Option two would see opening hours at all libraries except Gayton Library in Harrow and Wealdstone cut back to 22 and half hours a week, in a move which would save £250,000. Option three is to give community groups the chance to run library services, with the council only paying for new stock. The proposal to close Hatch End Library comes just a fortnight after the council voted against closing the arts centre where it is housed.
