Residents of a Berkhamsted road are keeping the community spirit alive by serenading each other on their birthdays.
The Greenway community have created a WhatsApp group in which they tell each other.
The latest birthday on the road – they then set a time to celebrate it together from their front doors.
Fortunately, it’s a musically rich community – one of the residents is a music teacher, so has a plethora of instruments to choose from, while others play their ukuleles, pianos, violins and even kazoos.
The latest birthday on the street was seven-year-old Sid Loczy’s on Wednesday, April 22.
His mum Bev said: “He had a great day, mainly because of the fantastic celebration on Greenway. It’s great to see around 40 people come out and celebrate something together – Sid was a bit overwhelmed by it all, as was I really.
“There’s such a nice atmosphere and it really brings people together. When the singing is over, most people stick around on their doorsteps and have a chat with their neighbour for 15 minutes or so.”
As well as the organised singing, residents have struck up a tradition of writing birthday messages in chalk on the pavements outside of the birthday boy’s/girl’s house.
Sid’s were done while he was in bed the night before, so he had a surprise in the morning.
