GREEN GROWTH: Improvements to transform St Albans green space for recreational use

Published on: 25th March 2023   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Green space on the northeast edge of St Albans is to be converted for recreation.

Several improvements will be made to the Jersey Farm Open Space, which lies on the edge of the city, including paths with greater accessibility, bins to prevent littering, and signage to teach people about the area.

Creating a new space for ramblers, cyclists, dog walkers and more, the improvements will take place over the next 20 years. The plans support the biodiversity of the area and aim to provide a natural habitat for wild animals such as bats, birds and butterflies.

The main aim of the new space is to attract some local people away from visiting the nearby Chilterns Beechwoods Special Area of Conservation at Ashridge Estate, where unintentional damage has been caused by the large number of visitors who come every year.

Following legislation introduced by Natural England, efforts are now being made to increase protection in this area.
