Two of Croxley’s Green Party councillors headed down to St Albans last month to attend a public outreach session on a new initiative mapping the erosion of nature across Hertfordshire.
According to councillors Chris Mitchell and Cheryl Stungo, the main takeaway from the session is that animals, birds and insects are declining across the borough.
Along with 48 other counties in England, Hertfordshire has committed to developing a Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) this year. The LNRS will map areas of habitat across the county, as well as identifying where practical action is a priority.
Project spokesperson and county councillor Eric Buckmaster said: “We are excited to see how we can enhance our open spaces by mapping key habitats and species to identify opportunities for nature recovery. This could include supporting wildflower meadows, tree planting, or river and wetland restoration, but we need you to have your say.
“By joining the engagement process, you will help us better understand our habitats and species. From there, the LNRS can then identify priorities in order to protect natural habitats and enhance biodiversity across Hertfordshire.”
Cllr Mitchell added: “We as Greens fully support these initiatives, and want to encourage as many people as possible to get in touch with the project, as every little step in the right direction will help.”
Residents are invited to participate in webinars and in-person events, details of which can be found here.
