Northwood FC have shared their reflections on the season after surviving the threat of relegation.
Going into the last month of the season, things were looking bleak for the club as they sat second from bottom in the table, having lost nine of their last 10 matches.
Manager Gary Meakin chose that moment to step down, and relegation was looking certain.
The club scrambled for a new manager to complete the season and ultimately asked the players if any of them would be willing to shoulder the responsibility.
Speaking to Northwood&Ruislip News, a spokesperson for the club shared: “Two hands went up: 33-year-old Jon-Jo Bates and Jack Smith, who’s just 28.”
The pair took on the challenge, leading to a 1-1 draw, a 5-2 away win, and a 0-1 loss.
The spokesperson continued: “More was needed [after these results], and the side pulled that off with a sequence of four successive wins, the first three at home to sides in the top eight, including a 6-0 thrashing of Biggleswade and a 3-2 defeat of another play-off seeking side in Thame United.
“Survival was confirmed when the Woods then won 4-1 at bottom club North Leigh to pull off a surprise great escape with easily their best form of the whole season.”
The final game of the season on Saturday, April 26, saw the club draw against Barton Rovers 2-2, securing 16th place in the Southern Central league with 40 points.
The spokesperson added: “The last two home games brought in the best crowds of the season, both over 200, and was a great reward for the long-suffering Woods fans, who stayed loyal throughout such a difficult campaign and made a huge difference in the winning run of home matches.”
